    • Ronaldo Blames Everyone But Himself For Derby Red Card

      Ronaldo inexplicably handles the ball

It's fair to say that Cristiano Ronaldo probably finds it difficult to accept when things are his fault. Now, rather than coming clean and just admitting that he made a stupid mistake when he handled the ball for his second bookable offence on Sunday during the Manchester derby between City and United, he has blamed referee Howard Webb.

Webb was left with no choice but to give Ronaldo his second yellow card after the forward somewhat bizarrely jumped and palmed the ball away following a United corner rather than heading it. The Portuguese player claims that he was actually acting 'responsibly' though.

The player had received his first yellow card a few minutes earlier for a foul on City's Shaun Wright-Phillips, a player who was allegedly targeted for rough treatment by United's midfielders.

"Rooney took the corner, I jumped and that was when I heard a shout from (Micah) Richards and simultaneously the sound of a whistle," said Ronaldo earlier.

"At that moment I was convinced the referee had blown for a foul. I stopped trying to head the ball and score a goal and I grabbed the ball so that Richards could get help.

"It never entered my mind that the referee would show me a yellow card because for me I had not done anything wrong. To the contrary after Richards yelled I thought he was hurt and needed assistance.

"I heard the whistle, so I took the initiative and stopped the match."

And Ronaldo was even prepared to blame the Manchester City supporters for what happened.

"I understood the referee wanted to talk to me but maybe influenced by the fans, he put his hand in his pocket and sent me off," the player added.

"I tried to explain what happened but he did not want to listen."

    • Cristiano Ronaldo: I Am 'Analysed To Death'

Cristiano Ronaldo has, of course, become Manchester United's first Ballon d'Or recipient since George Best in 1968.

      Cristiano Ronaldo

It's the ultimate fix of positive recognition, even if opinion is still split on the free-scoring Portuguese superstar.

However, speaking to The Sun before picking up the prestigious European Footballer of the Year gong, the 23-year-old was bemoaning the downside of his superstar status.

Perhaps peeved after being sent off for a strange second yellow - for a calamitous hand ball - during Sunday's Manchester derby win, the winger-cum-striker said: "I have come to understand that every movement I make, on or off the pitch, is analysed to death.

"If I don’t celebrate goals, it is because I am sad. If I talk to the public, it is because I have lost my humility. My slightest gesture gets every type of criticism.

"People are always waiting for me to do something and they just pick on what are absolutely normal and unimportant things to criticise."

He then made a dreadful attempt at trying to be humble, slipping into the third person and describing himself as 'the best'.

He added: "Cristiano Ronaldo will continue to be the same as he always was, regardless of what happens.

"People who know me well say, 'they only criticise the best'. I am damned if I do and damned if I don’t."

For now, at least, Ronaldo is on top of the footballing world and, while he's perched there, people will continue to watch him like vultures.

At least he didn't hear a phantom whistle and punch the Ballon d'Or, or throw it into the crowd like Didier Drogba.

    • Mourinho: Ronaldo Didn't Deserve Ballon d'Or

Inter coach Jose Mourinho has stunned everyone with his response when asked to give his views on Cristiano Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or win.

The Manchester United ace scooped the award for his wonder season last term where he dragged his side to a Premier League and Champions League double.

Ronaldo became the third Portuguese player to have won the Golden Ball after Eusebio and Luis Figo but Mourinho scoffed at the achievement and he revealed he would have preferred to have seen someone else lift it.

Asked by Sky Italia about the Ronaldo win and whether he had any praise for the star, Mourinho said, "No, I would have preferred one of my own foreign players to have won the Ballon d'Or."

Inter are running away with the Serie A title given the six point gap between them and second place Juventus, but the coach is keeping his feet on the ground.

"The league still hasn't reached the halfway point and we cannot relax. We will continue to work hard everyday."

The coaches' words are likely to cause controversy around the world. The 'Special One' didn't even recognise his fellow countryman's achievement with praise.

    • Carlos Tevez Getting Closer To Real Madrid?

Just last week, Madrid-based sports daily Marca boomed proudly on its front pages that Carlos Tevez will be playing for Real Madrid next season.

Now, even the English press are convinced that the Argentine is bound to exit Old Trafford for the Santiago Bernabeu sooner rather than later.

According to The Daily Express, United’s refusal to tie up a permanent deal for the 24 year old, who is not only growing frustrated with his unresolved future but also with his lack of first team football this season, could prompt Madrid to make a move for him during the January transfer window, instead of the proposed July trade period next summer.

The Red Devils are currently shelling out €7 million as part of Tevez’s two year loan deal from West Ham which ends on 30 June 2009, but they would have to separate with €27 million if they are to exercise their purchase option and acquire his services permanently.

According to The Sun, businessman Kia Joorabchian, who owns Tevez’s economic rights, is believed to be disappointed with United for not completing the deal as promised and as the global financial crisis continues to hit hard, he could be tempted to listen to Los Blancos’ offer, should they make one come January.

Madrid themselves are desperate to boost their attacking firepower following the season-ending knee injury to Ruud van Nistelrooy.

    • Speaking to the News of the World, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that he had no intention of hanging up his managerial mantle in the foreseeable future, despite saying last season that he hoped to call it quits by the time he turned 70.

"Why would I pack it in at the moment? I don’t ever think about it any more — it’s all out of my mind," said the 66-year-old. "It doesn’t come into it now. I don’t even think about it.

"I am not even going to put myself into that situation where I am thinking should I this year, should I next year?"

On the surface at least, there seems to be no reason why Ferguson should bring the curtain down on his glorious 22-year stay at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are currently defending crowns on both the European and domestic fronts, and their squad is arguably stronger than the one which claimed the Treble in 1999.

Thus, with United in such a healthy state, only Ferguson's own infirmity could stand in his way, and he joked: "If my health deteriorated, that solves the problem for everyone. You would be rid of me for good!"

But even Sir Alex wouldn't admit that he has never thought about retirement, and he has already made up his mind about the proper way to do it.

"I won’t wake up one day and say that’s it. I wouldn’t do that," he said. "The time to retire would be at the end of the summer. I used to say top players don’t retire at the end of the season.

"I remember (former Celtic manager) Billy McNeill retiring at the end of the season then he got through the summer and he was wanting to go again - he was sorry he retired.

"You have a summer break and get refreshed again you want to go again.

"But if you have your holiday and come in for the first training session and think - not another training session, I think that would be the time."

    • Manchester United received six yellow cards during the Manchester derby against City today, and will receive a fine from the English FA. The bulk of those cards seemed to be handed to players who'd been briefed to target City's Shaun Wright-Phillips for some rough treatment, according to the Blues' manager Mark Hughes.

"If I can be diplomatic and say United have great experience of being able to control the game and dictate the momentum of the play," said the Welshman this afternoon.

"Sometimes they do that by stopping people in their tracks and Shaun was stopped on numerous occasions."

As for the second yellow card shown to Ronaldo for deliberate handball, Hughes had no sympathy for the United player and felt the referee made the right decision.

"I don't think the referee had any choice," said Hughes. "I don't know what reason he will give for doing it but if he says the ball was going to hit him in the face why didn't he head it?

"It is a soft sending-off but it was a second bookable offence and he had to go."

Hughes was more conciliatory about his old club when it came to the quality of football that they played though.

"We showed them too much respect in the first half," he added. "This is not going to happen overnight for us.

"We are going in the right direction but it takes time. We have to compete against that and in the near future we will.

"But at the moment they are a better team than us."

Hughes will now have to lift his players ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Cup tie with Paris St-Germain, but received some more bad news ahead of that fixture.

City's powerful England centre-back Micah Richards will be missing from the game against the French team after he limped out of today's game during the second-half.

Ronaldo surely steal all the limelight away from Rooney...

Vidic was the man in our defence last night, without him i think the defence would be shaky as usual!

The Ronaldo handball thing, I notice it too. I was telling my friend that he was in great position to head the ball, and put it into the back of the net. But somehow he use his hand icon_confused.gif
